In the winter of 1997, the Spice Girls, Shania Twain and Elton John were Billboard’s Hottest 100. But alongside them and Hanson’s MMMBop, something else was breaking the Hot 100 records. Talk to anyone who was pouring foundations in California and you’ll hear about the century-breaking El Niño. Across the United States, crews were sent home for weeks, material yards were flooded and the humidity spikes made putting on the finishing touches a schedule-breaking delay.

Now, we’re back to a similar historic warning, with fewer Europop songs to help us cope.

The NOAA is watching a Pacific warming event that will be the strongest El Niño event in history. Just a month ago, the Climate Prediction Center had raised the chance to just over 80% of a “strong event”. Now, that figure is unquestioned, with an even more intimidating number behind it; a 70% (and growing) chance that this El Niño will beat every one on record as far back to 1950.

For an industry that runs on schedules, material deliveries and outdoor labor – that’s the signal to start preparing for major roadblocks, figuratively and literally, to end the year and kickstart the next.

Protecting your regional supply chain

The El Niño of ‘97- ‘98 caused an estimated $19 billion in damages. In the U.S., the South and West were hammered by severe flooding and humidity, while the northern U.S. saw mild temperaments that made a construction boom possible.

The regional impact of El Niño will be split dramatically, but the data from the past can give us a look into the future.

Get ready for for supply chain chokepoints.
Rivers used to move steel, lumber, and raw materials disrupted transit times and port delays in ‘98, with extreme flooding across key supply chain corridors globally. Both the Yangtze and Mississippi River suffered historical flooding and a subsequent slowdown because of the last “Super El Niño.”

Overstock lumber where you can.
Increased moisture through the season raises the odds of warping in anything left exposed or under-covered. Getting ahead of that means building in buffer stock rather than ordering to the day.

Plan tighter windows for finishing work.
Drywall, adhesives, and paint all need a narrow temperature and humidity band to cure properly. Because those trades come late in the schedule, a lost week here compounds everything that came before it. Wood movement and temperature swings are normal on any job – an El Niño winter just makes them sharper and harder to plan around.

Overall, the Southeast will see increased rainfall from October thru March with rising humidity and intense flooding. The Pacific Northwest, Northern Plains, Great Lakes and Ohio Valley are on the other side of the pattern – milder and drier than normal, which sounds like a break but isn’t entirely one. Thinner snowpack means less spring runoff for regions that depend on it. The heat side moves too. Phoenix logged more than 100 consecutive days above 100 degrees the last time an El Nino ran strong. A season swinging this hard on both ends – flood risk in some regions, extended extreme heat in others – means planning for more than what last year’s weather taught you.

None of this is abstract once a storm actually lands. Flooding, lightning and hurricane-force wind puts anyone who has to visit the site at risk. It’s also the exact window when jobsites are most likely to be hit by theft. This is where the infrastructure a lot of site security technology quietly depends on, tends to fail.
