Report Update: Activity Continues to Rise

June 22, 2020

Construction activity continues to be on the rise in the United States. The last report update saw a large increase beginning in June, which coincided with a sharp increase in construction jobs and the reopening of every state. New York and Massachusetts continue to have the largest upswings while Michigan, Washington and Colorado have modest bumps. Pennsylvania still hovers at the baseline but is still experiencing a large increase compared to activity levels in March and April.

As always, we continue to monitor California’s construction activity levels because of its status as the largest economy in the nation. Currently, the state is hovering at the baseline with no large increases or decreases in the past two weeks. New Jersey continues to experience the enormous growth in activity seen in our last report.

On a national level, activity is above the levels seen in early March. Levels have continued to steadily increase since the beginning of June.

As the crisis continues, OxBlue will share regular updates on how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting the construction industry and on the technology being developed to combat the spread of the virus.

Notes: The time period in this analysis includes the 109 workdays (weekdays) from March 2nd, 2020, to June 19th, 2020. The OxBlue Construction Activity Index is a 5-day moving average. The current baseline for the OxBlue Activity Index is the average activity level for the workdays from March 2nd to March 19th, the date Pennsylvania issued its strict shelter-in-place order. The data analyzed is from commercial construction projects and excludes single-family residential construction. States with low levels of construction activity and without statistically significant data have been excluded for accuracy. National construction activity is based on a weighted average of the construction volume for each state.
