Combating the Labor Shortage with Real-Time Visual Construction Data

A worsening labor shortage in the construction industry has driven up labor costs, and that isn’t the only issue. To fight this, firms are investing in innovative technologies and processes that raise productivity. In particular, visual construction monitoring is increasingly prevalent, driving efficiency in the face of worker shortages. One well known national construction program reported an 18 percent reduction in project duration attributed directly to the implementation of professional construction camera services for better project management.

A small skilled labor pool means more time on oversight and callbacks, especially when project managers have limited time on site and rely on sparse, written updates. Access to real-time visual construction data makes remotely monitoring sites easier and takes the ambiguity out of sub-contractor performance.

It’s said that the best builders are the best schedulers, and that couldn’t be truer during a labor shortage. Project managers are using construction cameras to keep themselves and their job sites on schedule. A clear timetable can boost communication among project workers and decreases cycle times, and the best way to keep a project on track is through effective monitoring of the project. Though each job site is different, looking at the results from several national construction programs is useful when validating the return on investment (ROI). Recently one national chain reported eliminating one business day per week of project management time, as well as substantial reductions in travel time, cost and response times as a result of implementing a professionally managed construction camera program. Perhaps most impactful has been the ability to manage by exception as project teams no longer spread their time across all projects evenly and are able to know where and when to focus attention.

OxBlue’s professional construction camera services provide continuously visible verification, keeping project stakeholders informed about the work being accomplished as well as creating peace of mind. High-resolution images, high-definition time-lapse videos, and intuitive technologies connect everyone to the job site, allowing management to evaluate job site progress at any time.

“Naturally, the more eyes a project has on it, the more it drives quality and schedule,” says OxBlue CEO Chandler McCormack. “Not only do strong contractors want to show off what they can do, but when there is visibility on a project they become a higher priority for sub-contractors. They want to show off what they can do.”

Coupling the labor shortage with the increased demand for building projects means technology is more important than ever. Companies are looking for advantages to increase efficiency and do more with less, including small-scale solutions designed to ease the increased costs caused by the labor shortage.
